For as long as there have been books, there have been individuals trying to prohibit access to certain books. Banned Book Week is a time to celebrate literature. So pick up a book -- any book -- and enjoy!

The American Library Association compiles a list every year representing the most frequently challenged books from the previous year. A "challenged book" has, for whatever reason, been considered by one of more people to be inappropriate, and its removal from library shelves has been requested. On the other hand, a "banned book" is a challenged book that has actually been removed from the shelves.
