Death of a SalesmanDeath of a Salesman
Arthur Miller

Death of a Salesman won the Pulitzer Prize for drama, had a long run on Broadway, and was made into a successful motion picture. It deals with Willy Loman, a traveling salesman who lives and believes in a world of false values in which"popularity" and "personality" are of prime importance. A realistically critical expression of American life, Death of a Salesman has been called an attempt "to develop a poetic drama rooted in American speech and manners". It is the best exemplification of Miller's theory that tragedy is possible in the modern theatre and that its proper hero is the "common Man".

The CrucibleThe Crucible
Arthur Miller

Set in the Salem of 1692, Arthur Miller's new play brings to powerful life the problem of guilt by association. In this instance, the association is, according to the accusers, with the devil. Based on the actual witch trials that became hysterically epidemic in Salem of that time, the drama revolves around Elizabeth Proctor and her husband John, who, rather than support the vicious fiction of some exhibitionistic girls and thus save their necks, stand fast with the truth -- and send John Proctor to the gallows. Here, from the first improvised fabrications of the adolescents, through the increasing violence of their accusations, to the climactic scene of the trial itself and its grim aftermaths, is drama that recalls the great Aristotelian formula for tragedy -- catharsis through pity and terror.
